TASK 2 //
HISTORY AND CONVENTIONS OF GENRE
Click the image above to view my timeline on the history of the coming of age genre, where I explore how the genre has evolved over the last 50 years. I have used examples of coming of age films to help demonstrate the growth.
From this research task, I have learnt how the coming of age genre has evolved over years. I discovered how certain themes, such as drugs, violence and teenage pregnancy, are becoming more common within the genre and society is more open to hard-hitting topics than before. I was also able to view existing iconic coming of age films to see what has possibly made these films so successful. For example, I was able to view well-known films, such as 'Grease' and 'The Breakfast Club'. Along with this, I have presented a Youtube clip, where I show the conventions of the genre. From this research, I learnt what is typical, in terms of character types and themes, within the genre. This will help me when planning my own short film, as it has allowed me to discover what is already present in the genre's market, as well as what the genre is lacking. I can choose to follow the conventions, as well as subvert the typical types of coming of age films. It is conventional for a coming of age film to feature teenage characters, be located at a school or a home and for the narrative to be based around violence, drugs and alcohol, romance or friendships.
