TASK 6 //
CONVENTIONS AND ICONOGRAPHY OF GENRE

Click on the image above (on the left) to view my mindmap on the conventions of a coming of age film. This mindmap covers the typical themes, characters, sounds, narrative, props/settings and includes the comparrison to other genres, such as horror. On the right, I have displayed the posters of the films I discussed in my mindmap as examples of films which fit a particular convention within the genre. For example, both Kidulthood and Adulthood have the conventional theme of a coming of age film, where it may explore gang culture, as well as drugs and alcohol. On the other hand, Mean Girls follows the conventions of a coming of age film being set partly in a shopping centre, as this is where teenagers may want to spend their free time.
Presented to the left of this text is a video, filmed in the style of a cooking show video, where the products which I am baking are two coming of age films. The films which I 'bake' are called Mean Girls and Superbad, which are both within the genre and are feature films. I had analysed particular shots within the entire film, pin-pointing the specific elements of the film which have allowed the the conventions and iconography of the genre to be used. These conventions include the themes of drugs and alcohol, sex and violence. Also, various colour schemes have been used to allow the audience to relate to the film.

After the completion of this task, it had allowed me to become very familiar with what is typical for a coming of age film to implement into the production in order to maintain the conventions and iconography within the genre. There are various aspects of the films which are conventional, such as the themes explored, the typical narrative, character types, props, settings and sounds. Typical themes explored include: drugs and alcohol, violence, gang culture, young love, sex and desire of acceptance. These themes are implemented in films, such as Mean Girls, Adulthood, Sahar, Even Cowboys Get To Cry and Alone with People (short films). Another aspect would be typical character types. These character types could vary from 'the crush' to 'the bully'. The crush role is plays a strong part within the narrative in feature films, such as Mean Girls, The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Superbad. The bully is shown throughout the narratives of Adulthood and This is England, where they are represented to be hooligans. From this task, I will be able to understand what the audience of the coming of age genre is expecting to see, as this will allow me to either follow or challenge particular conventions when constructing my own media texts. At this point in time, I intent to maintain some conventional values, as it will allow the audience to understand what type of film the product is, as well as relate to the film.
