TASK 5 //
INTERIM EVALUATIONS/FEEDBACK OF WORK
Jasveen Gill: "Your coming of age was very interesting to watch and kept me intrigued throughout the entire way through! I thought the way the film opened, where the protagonist was seen getting ready really made the suspense build up as to what she was getting ready for and why this was so important for her to be skipping school for. I automatically had assumed her to be thuggish and up to no good, but I was not ready for a rude awakening! One critique I had about the production was the audio levels when the voiceover was introduced. Although it was able to be heard, I could not actually make out what the voiceover was saying at certain points."
- From this comment, I was very pleased to hear that I was able to cater to this audience members needs, especially as she was within the target audience os 13 to 24 year olds. It also made me happy that she was able to assume what the character type of the protagonist would be - which she said was "thuggish and up to no good." This allowed the idea of the audience to be surprised when they viewed the production and saw that she is actually a very talented teenage girl, giving off the message of "don't judge a book by it's cover". I also decided to reduce the volume of the soundtrack, as I agreed with the comment of the voiceover not being able to be heard properly.
Abdi Mohammad: "The soundtrack which was used within the short film was very appropriate, as it was part of the rock genre and this would probably have been what the type of music the protagonist's character type would be listening to if she was a real person. I also knew the song before I viewed the production. However, I believed the lighting in the first couple of shots was very dark and I was unable to view the shots in full effect."
- This comment allowed me to understand that the audience know the soundtrack which I have decided to incorporate into my coming of age short film. This is conventional for the audience to have already heard the song used, therefore I am glad it had been met. This allows the audience to relate to the media text more and become more engaged as they realise they know the soundtrack. In response to the criticism, I have colour-corrected the shots within the first scene using Final Cut Pro's colour editor.
Jasdeep Grewal: "This was the type of film I would watch in my own free time! I enjoyed the narrative of the film, as well as how it played out on screen. I quite enjoyed the use of minimalist dialogue and sound in general. However, I did think the title of the short film appeared on screen in a bit of a basic manner, which I believed could have been approached in more of a creative way."
- I was happy to hear that the narrative of the film was able to fulfil the requirements of a film to allow it to be interesting and unique to my audience. With the negatives of my film within the response, I believed I should not act on the comment as it was not something which other people who I had asked felt the same about. Also, it was conventional for the title to appear in this manner, therefore I did not feel it would be sensible to change the appearance of the title due to one person's opinion.
Navpreet Malhotra: "The coming of age film which I viewed had a great impact on me. As someone who had been bullied in the past, I believe the right approach was taken when trying to portray a teenage girl who was going through a rough time in her life, due to the abuse at school. I liked the way the voiceover of the abuse was layered on top of the shot of her having a panic attack, opposed to the bullies being shown, as it allowed the production to stay professional."
- The fact that an audience member was able to relate to the themes which were incorporated into the short film I produced filmed me with happiness, as it allowed me to understand that my research had let me to create an impactful product. This means my target audience will be able to relate to my product and can make a larger group of people interested in the narrative of my film.
