For this task, I have chosen to present my research in the style of an x ray examination, where I have placed still frames from the films I have analysed on different parts of the body. The two films which I have chosen to analyse are 'Soft' and 'My Dad'. I had chosen My Dad, as this is an animated short film. I wanted to explore my options as a researcher by looking into films which are not typical in the genre, such as animated movies. It has opened the opportunity for my to produce my own animated film for my final product if chosen to do so.

From analysing two films in depth, frame by frame, I have learnt many things about coming of age short films. I have learnt about timings and general structure of a film, such as the disruption of the equilibrium being introduced almost immediately in a short film, as well as majority of the plot is based upon dealing with this problem and finding a solution. It was also a way for me to apply my knowledge of conventions within the genre, such as a lack of connection between a protagonist and their parents, as well as typical costumes within the genre. More specifically, 'Soft' featured a character in white tracksuit, which is a typical costume within the genre. Most importantly, in my opinion, I have learnt about the various mise-en-scene scattered throughout the short film. Mise-en-scene can suggest many things through just the appearance of an object. For example, in 'My Dad', there are various people visible on screen pushing each other, which portrays the environment to be chaotic and dangerous. I can use what I have learnt when planning my own production, as I have gained a sense of knowledge around the typical frame appearance, where I will pay a huge attention towards the background of any shots I choose to film.
