TASK 5 //

SYNOPSIS PLANNING

Before the short film even begins, the production company logo and name is displayed, as well as the short film’s name. The opening scene is of my protagonist, Sophie, looking at herself in the mirror. There are various shots of her used while she looks at herself whilst getting ready to leave her house. She is seen to be wearing a full-black outfit with dark makeup on her face. Furthermore, the walls of her bedroom wall are covered in posters of rock and heavy metal bands. The voiceover of her thoughts is layered on top of this scene. When fully dressed, she picks up her bag from the floor of her room and places it on her bed. She begins to remove school books, textbooks and her pencil case and starts filling her black bag with a drink, some food and her bus pass. She then puts her bag on her shoulder, puts her headphones in her ears then exits the house. The non-diegetic music then begins to play.

After leaving her house, she begins walking through alleyways, subways and parks. These are conventional locations for a coming of age film. She eventually reaches the outside of the secondary school she attends. A shot is used to show her walk towards the sign, where the sounds of her being bullied at school are layered on top of the shot. The sound intensifies and the screen begins to fade into black. Once the screen is completely black, the sound begins to fade out and returns to a shot of Sophie composing herself after having a panic attack. She then begins to walk away from the school.

When she enters the hall, she continues walking to a particular room, where there is a sign which has the writing ‘Violin recital’ displayed outside. A long take is also taken for this particular shot to allow the audience to view the full poster in time. After this, it cuts to a long shot of a group of people rehearsing for their violin show later that day. They are very welcoming to the protagonist and begin discussing their show with her. The short film ends on a shot of a close up of the protagonist playing the violin, where the shot is a close up of her hands on the instrument as she plays. The music continues playing as the credits begin to appear on screen on a black screen.

She eventually reaches the outside of the secondary school she attends. A shot is used to show her walk towards the school sign, where she begins to slow down and a flashback begins to occur. The flashback will show Sophie being bullied at school in two separate shots, where in the first one she is verbally abused and the second she is physically abused. This will then cut back to Sophie outside the school with a disgusted face as she walks past the school, continuing to walk away from the school.

Synopsis 2

When I was showing people this synopsis which I had created, they felt it would be difficult for me to recreate the flashback scenes, where the protagonist is being bullied, professionally. I also felt that it did not follow the conventional minimalism approach with coming of age short films do, therefore I planned to change this. My new idea was based around the idea of the sounds of Sophie being abused would be layered over the clip of Sophie walking past the school, which would imply the hardships which she faced within the school. This would avoid the risk of the film taking a heavy-handed approach.
