After deciding on which head on to pursue as the idea for my coming of age short film, I decided to brainstorm around the main aspects of the feature using a online mind map creator (mindmeister.com). The four main aspects of the film which I had thought about was the characters and their names and age, the possible settings of the film, the brief storyline of what will happen in the short film and the themes which would have been explored.

 

From this, I was able to identify that the name of the protagonist of the film would be Sophie Hibbons. I also chose to have her friend within the production to be named Nicole Carter, where they would both be aged 17. I felt it was very important to keep main characters in the film to a minimum, as this is conventionally done within the genre, as well as in short films as a whole. Sophie would be within the entire production, where Nicole would only be featured in a specific part. In terms of settings, I chose to have my short film to be based in West London. I chose this area, as this is the area I live in and would be able to create the feel of an urban area around the home of the protagonist. I would like to base the production in the settings of a school, recital halls, an alleyway and a subway. These locations are typical within the genre, therefore I felt it was essential for my production to be considered professional. 

The brief storyline has also been established in order for me to understand what locations and props may be needed in order to film. My initial thoughts are that Sophie could be seen getting ready to go to her violin lesson at her home, where she then sets off to go to her lesson. As she walks past her school, she begins to have flashbacks of her disruptive past. Eventually, she gets to her violin lesson and begins to express herself. Lastly, I felt I needed to ensure that I have been able to follow the conventional plot of a coming of age short film, therefore I wanted to know what themes have been explored when pursuing this idea for my own production. I would be including the themes of bullying, issues of identity and possible absence of parents.
