When looking into the conventions of film posters within the genre, this allowed me to understand the typical features found in a poster and showed me what features I should aspire to implement into my own posters as part of my ancillary tasks. During the task, I found out the definition of a film poster, which is something which includes textual and graphical elements and is used to promote a new film which is set to be released or has recently been released. This is a form of marketing within the film industry and has proven to be a successful way to allow audiences to be notified about these new productions available to be seen. I learnt about various conventions, such as the use of large titles, taglines, images, billing blocks, bankable star names and most importantly, the release date. With all of these features, it is easily identifiable that the poster is aimed to promote a film of the genre. I have also gained an understanding of the positioning and sizes of particular elements on the poster. For example, the image is often the background of the poster, where titles are displayed on top of the image and are seen in bold, capitalised letters. Whereas the billing block is seen at the bottom of the poster and is in a smaller font when in comparison to the title. I wish for my own products to follow the conventions of the genre as this will allow audiences to identify what my film is about and the themes included in the production. Therefore, this task will help me when planning my own film poster, as I now know what will need to be included.
