TASK 18 //
MAKE UP
Within my coming of age short film, the make up of my protagonist is extremely important, as it will be able to connote to my audience how she is a emo-influenced goth. This must be conveyed in order for my short film to be successfully perceived the way I would like, as my film plays off the stereotypes which are typically assumed about gothic people. If they are portrayed successfully and the protagonist is seen as an emo by the audience, it will allow them to assume what she is like and where she might be heading to when she is walking on the streets. This will then allow the audience of the production to be shocked when she is seen playing the violin, allowing them to remember the production and allowing it to stand out from previous films they may have seen.
Firstly, the foundation which my protagonist wore in the production was Maybelline's Super Stay 24 foundation. I chose this particular tone of colour, as it was slightly lighter than the skin colour of the protagonist. This allowed her facial features which were going to be darkened to stand out more. For example, her eye lids and lipstick would be more defined if other features had become lightened. The brand was chosen as the protagonist usually uses their products, therefore we knew how to apply the make up and knew that it would be a feasible idea.
Furthermore, I had used mascara to make the actor's eyelashes darker and this allowed her eyes to stand out more. The product I had used was called. This particular model was used, as its purpose is to darken the outer eye region, opposed to making the eye lashes longer.
I also picked out the eye shadow which the protagonist wore to be a shade of black, where it would match the mascara's colour. This allowed her to fit the role of a 'goth', as during my research phase, I was able to construct the conventional appearance of them. They tend to wear dark shades around their eyes, which is why I chose to do the same. The mascara's brand was, and was chosen as the protagonist had previously used this make up palette and believed it was successfully used on her skin.
Finally, the protagonist used a lipstick tube, to make her lips black. This was also part of the conventional look of an emo. It allowed her lips to match up with the rest of her make up and blended well with the costume she was wearing, which was also mainly black.
